  • First impressions (PC version)...

...and they're pretty good, to be fair! I stand by what I said about the cushion sounds etc and I really wish there was a different aiming system, but this is a fun game and that is the main thing. Granted, ball physics and cushion rebound aren't spot on - although no worse than previous games in the series (Blade, just take a peek at JWWS and VP3) and the table's a bit slow (but a trick I use in real life works here - put a little bit of top on the c/b and it runs faster) but my first impressions of this game are positive. Obviously, there is still the save game problem that you've all mentioned to be fixed and until it is, I won't actually buy the game, but if it is fixed, then I'll probably pick this up fairly soon. For me, being able to take the shot from lower down on the table than in previous games (on PC, at least) makes a lot of difference, as I feel I am now taking the shot. From the higher angle, it just takes you right out of the game for me.

I spent the afternoon and evening more or less round my mate's house, so I was able to get a good ol' session in and the snooker gameplay is fun. The atmosphere and snooker 'feel' apart from those damned cushions, is almost spot on.

I would like online with PC though, I can see myself wanting to do that at some point - if I buy the game and that, dear Blade depends on whether or not you release a patch, because this save game problem is currently a gamebreaker.

Edit: It's a bit weird, offputting and hurts the 'real TV atmoshphere' considerably when the players don't walk around the table, but magically appear in position for the next shot. Is there an option for this to be turned on or off, or is this how the game's supposed to be? It really spoils the feel of the game, but it's still fun to play. Oh, and the colours just re appearing on the table?? Come on, Blade. I'm sure both the players walking round the table and the ref respotting the colours were in earlier editions of the game.

By the way, why was 2007 never released on PC??

Edit: Actually, the commentary is awful, mainly thanks to JV. He gets on your back if you take more than a few seconds to execute a shot, utters complete rubbish such as ' I'd love a cucumber sandwich' and other crap. This sort of thing would never be said in real commentary, especially the insults about the players taking their time; if they were said, the commentator in question would find himself in trouble. The other two I don't mind: is there a way to choose the commentator you wish to use?

By the look of how unfinished this game is I think this is the 2007 version

To anyone who has got to an actual tournament:

If you meet a player like Ronnie O'Sullivan or John Higgins, is it actually possible to beat them after you've made a mistake?? I found in earlier games that, if you made a mistake and left reds all over the table, someone like Ronnie O'Sullivan would then procede to clean up. Always. Now, as we know, it just doesn't work like that in real life, sometimes even if the table is wide open, Ronnie doesn't make a century! Is that aspect better in this game?

I put the clock on it just now, the time that JV gives before giving some snide comment: approx 15 seconds. And it isn't just snide, it's downright rude and not at all funny!

One of this games mysteries - in WSC 2005 the commentary (Which is near identical to 09 never had JV commenting on how long you was taking over a shot)

This 'feature' has been added in for 07 and 09.

Mate, if I was a snooker player and heard JV talking about me like that, he'd earn himself a knuckle sandwich. Never mind a sodding cucumber sandwich! Also, Blade what's with the shameless plugging of the game by JV? We've played it. We know how good/bad (delete as appropriate) it is!

While I'm on about first impressions, I'm disappointed to see that 'call frame' is still in there. Who 'calls the frame' instead of sinking the final black in real snooker? No-one! It's been a tense frame and then up comes this stupid 'call frame' option. Is it some kind of American thing?

Blade should have got new commentators like willie thorne or maybe Dennis Taylor.

I think it needs alot of work, the graphics are the big main improvement but a part of me wouldn't have minded worse graphics if Blade would have overhauled the commentary.

It's such a shame Ted Lowe is no longer around, he was the best snooker commentator there ever was and there ever will be. For those too young to know who I mean, catch the 1985 final, they re-run the final frame often on ESPN Classic. The man's voice was made for snooker!

Yeah, Ted Lowe was a legend, no doubt, he would have been the best commentator in the game, in my opinion. In the 2004 version in the classic matches mode, someone else commentates which sounds a bit like Ted Lowe, but I think someone's was copying Ted Lowe, to make the atmosphere in the classic match mode more realistic. Have you played classic match mode in WSC 2004? There is only the one commentator.

Then again, if he was forced to spout the sort of dross Blade write for their commentators, well I wouldn't want to hear that. He's far too good for that. JV's a lousy commentator anyway, so I don't really give a damn about him.
