my only disappointment is the quality of 'wood' used for the mini - chipboard would be as good.

This diameter of BSW has the same pitch of the American UNC thread, which was adopted in this country during the second world war.
However despite having the same pitch, the crest of the thread is different so can bind up if the tolerances are not strictly adhered to.
If you go into any good engineers merchants they should have a set of gauges to indentify the numerous different types of machine type threads that are available.

adr147,
how does an ebony butt spoils the balance? i thought the butt is just there when theres a need for extensions?? ?.?
so does that mean getting a butt joint in itself is screwing the balance up already?See new updates: http://cueporn.tumblr.com/

How you doing Stan?
My Q.R fittings use a 3/8 ACME thread.
It's a bit of a tricky one to get taps for it seems, as I discovered when the one used to make my joints broke during machining. £650 for a new pair to be made up as specials.
Oh how I laughed at that.

I think what Andrew is saying is that the cue becomes very heavy when an ebony mini-butt is attached.
As you say though, extensions are used in a "one shot scenario" usually, so it isn't a big problem, even though the increased weight makes it feel like you're cueing with an iron bar.
Q/R joints in the end of cues makes absolutely no difference to how a cue behaves at all in practise, so it isn't something that a player should be hugely concerned about.

Acme means non standard, so ties and taps aren't available off the shelf
ie from Asia in bulk!
From what I remember your butt joint threads have similar pitch to BSW but have a flattened crest similar to the uniloc pool cue joint.
And don't forget I have 200 in stock for you! And 200 of your main cue joint!
So order soon as my kids are looking forward to Christmas!
