  • Do you prefer FINE finish or Varnished?

Hey guys, just wanna see your opinions on varnished and none varnished cues and which do you prefer?

Mines a fine finish not varnished, but i wanna get it nice and glossy, does anyone know what i should use? Do the pros in the tournaments use varnished or none?

    Let me know

    Oil or wax finish mate.

I don't think that anybody likes a varnished cue. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

A glossy cue might look smooth and slippy, but it will stick to your bridge hand like shíte sticks to a blanket.

There are plenty of posts on here about applying Linseed Oil. If you search for it in the forums, you'll find plenty of advice.

Anybody that chooses varnish needs their head examining imo.

It's awful when on every other shot the cue sticks to your bridging hand.

Linsed oil is the BEST finish by a long way. Do not use varnish, or you will have the bother of taking it off again.

Wait til the big time cue makers get a hold of this threat. The last time
this was discussed there was a small war between two cue makers.
One who according to himself " makes the best cue's in the world".

Hi Acrowot: I think the thread is related to what you are talking about.
Title of Thread: Linseed Oil or Varnish?

Looking at the thread you will see a detailed discussion/argument
between Keith Auld vs Mike Wooldridge.

Let me know if you find it.

Basically for the shaft no one likes varnish. For the butt there are many slightly different ways but I would say the bottom line is it has to protect the wood, be durable, and not get too sticky. Some makers are known to have better finish than others. A good hand rubbed oil finish is the way to go. Having said that some cue makers such as Kevin Deroo and Tom Gauthier from Canada are known to use varnish on some of the butts of their cues and their customers do not seem to mind.

About the thread someone dug up from ages ago, my opinion is if you are looking for useful info, please read that thread with caution when you come to Keith Auld's posts. If you just ignore all his posts you should be fine.

Perhaps it is worth mentioning that there was another thread later on by Keith Auld in which he said this "secret amazig finish" that he considered to be the best he has seen in 30 years was indeed not that good. He admitted there were some problems and offered to refinish those cues with this finish for all his customers. Well, shorter after that he just simply disappeared.
