Which protected species are you talking about? Perhaps vestal virgins (male or female, trying to be PC here!).

Or maybe lugging your shotgun and looking for the 'wascally wabbit' to quote Elmer Fudd.

For the rest of the students, as you will all be coming down on different days it might be a tad difficult to organize a small tourney unless some of you decide to take advantage of Sarah's offer of the economical accommodation.

Let's see what Sarah, Janie and I can come up with. I will have internet access while I'm there so we can get the word out to everyone through the Forum here and see how many takers we have for the available dates.

By the way, there's nothing better for improving your game than playing a good player under match conditions and often it's worth the entry fee as if you are observing closely you will likely learn a lot of good stuff that I may miss in your coaching session.

10AM 20/4/2011 for 4 hours would be brilliant.

Do you have an e-mail for further contact?

            Hi Terry,

Could I book the schedule quoted on Friday 11th April?

Friday 11th April might be a little tough as I don't arrive until 12th April and besides the 11th of April is a Monday. However, if that happens to be the only day you can do it you may be able to book a coaching session with one of the resident coaches by calling the Academy during business hours.

Friday the 15th is wide open however Friday the 22nd is already booked from 2pm to 5pm. Please let me know which day you would like.

              FOR EVERYONE!!!

To get through to me quicker and also so I can reply using my blackberry without having to turn on my computer, please use - terrydavidson45(at)gmail(dot)com - and I can respond right away to any prospective bookings or questions

OK, I have you booked for 2 x 1hr coaching sessions with me at 10-11am and 2-3pm. Your coaching charges will be 40pounds to me (no table time) and then you will pay the Academy table time for your practice periods of 11-2pm and 3-5pm (I believe the Academy business hours are 9-5pm rather than 9-6pm).

I would suggest you do a total of 4hrs practice time which will cost you 20pounds as there are the two options, either 4hrs for 20pounds or 40pounds for the whole day for table time.

Depending on your skill level and technique might I sugggest we have a 2hr first session as sometimes it's hard to impart what basics are needed in an initial 1hr session. This would make it 10-noon for the first session, then lunch/practice and then a good review and follow-up for 1hr at 3pm and that gives you the 4hrs practice time for 20 pounds but increases the coaching sessions to 60pounds

                    EVERYONE:

To save me having to fire up my computer to respond to you on here, would you please email me at - terrydavidson45(at)gmail(dot)com - as I have that on my blackberry and I can respond a lot easier.

Besides which, I know you guys are going to be critical of my skill level as a player and I need to get all the practice time I can before I arrive so at least I look half decent at the table!

It brings to mind the old saying - 'those that can, DO and those that can't, TEACH' and I have a difficult time with a few things that I teach as the 'ideal' technique, like the rear pause and also driving my cue through absolutely straight (it goes slightly left at the end of my delivery I think because I'm gripping the cue too tight at the end of the delivery).

Those are the 2 things I'll be working with when I have the full day from MY coach, Nic Barrow on April 13th, so maybe I'll have them mostly sorted for your lessons.

                        cally:

Well, the best 'cache' a coach can have, like Terry Griffiths, Steve Davis (when he coaches on his blog), Cliff Thorburn or ROS when he coaches the juniors at Riley's is their playing reputation and being ex-world champions (and maybe future world champ in ROS case).

My best achievement was Leicestershire County Champ in 1986, Southwest Ontario Champ in 1989 and a couple of pro-ams in the UK during the late 80's so a student will always go with a coach with the better playing rep, although that doesn't make the coach any better and in fact if they didn't have a standard technique they might be preaching their own technique to a student.

I've had a student ask me how I could possibly be a good player when I don't have a rear pause that is discernible and I have to explain how that happened.

I remember someone asking me about video analysis while I'm in Gloucester but can't find the posting. I won't be bringing my camera and laptop with me however the Academy does have video facilities so I'll see if I can use those.

Should be OK as long as there's a tripod and the camera is portable, since the best analysis shots are from firectly behind the cue or else just to the side a bit.

Evil Dealer (and anyone else interested in a coaching session with me):

I forgot to answer your question regarding something before the 16th. Right now I have all day April 14th free and 3 hours free from 2pm on April 15th.

For any others, all day 18th & 19th are free, after 2pm on the 20th, all day 21st is free and on the 22nd I have an open spot before 2pm.

Both Sundays the 17th and 24th are also free although the student would pay the full 40pounds table time

                                Janie:

That is really good news as I find video to be really helpful is you have a laptop with software in it which will do slow motion and stop motion frame by frame.

Actually, the freeware 'kinovea' which was posted on here awhile ago works very well and I'm using it to do my video analysis and it gives you both slow mothion and frame-by-frame stop motion which is very helpful in trying to determine exactly where a student is going off-line in the delivery as sometimes you can't see that when everything is happening so fast
