  • amazing match. John wasn't at his best but Steve was amazing, resisting the temptation to go negative. The shot on the brown was tremendous. The atmosphere must have been incredible with only one table in play.

I though John would come good in the end as has done it so many times, particularly at the crucible. But he didn't and Steve played a great final frame.

next up probably Martin Gould. I think only Martin's mother will be rooting for him in that one Will be a much tougher match for Steve as Martin is playing clinical, high quality snooker. Go Steve!

    • Its been over a decade since I shouted "YEAH!!" when watching snooker in my living room. But it happened twice during the final 2 frames.

          • That has to be one of the most exciting matches I have seen Steve play since I first saw him about 30 years ago! Quite amazing how he managed to keep his nerve with positive playing and I think it's the first time I have seen him play a pressure double (brown) like that in such an important match

He would still need to get to the final to get into the top16, or possibly even win the championship if both Perry and Dott get good results as well.

But it does help his provisional ranking for the start of next season. He was outside the top32 if he lost this match, but somewhere around 29th now. Still far from the top16 though.
Pleased to hear he's getting any points at all,I thought maybe you only got points for the qualifying rounds ,anyhow got no voice left from shouting at the telly !!!

              • Great match. Makes me feel sorry for those strange few people who don't watch snooker.

Hope Davis keeps this up. If I recall correctly he got to the quarter finals in 2005 and lost to Murphy? Similar scenario, but I think Steve's in better shape this year! If the occasion gets to Gould, or the pots just stop going in, Steve has a very good chance of getting to the semis. I think Steve would be a tougher opponent for Gould than Fu or Robertson either way.

Steve's reaction at the end of the match was terrific and John was very gracious in defeat. I'm pretty sure I saw admiration in John's eyes as he shook Steve's hand. Nice moment. Won't be missing a frame of Davis v Gould.

I think I heard John say in a post match interview that he told Davis that he was the best ever, in his (John's) eyes. Well deserved Steve, I had my fingers crossed for him on every pot in that final frame!

                      • The call that never came...

Great match. Only clouded by Davis's inability to call a fall on himself when brushing the red. Strange that Willie Thorne and Ken Docherty made light of it, too.

                        • Great match
just goes to show the drama that comes from games
with good safety play from both players.
Steve seemed to take his chances and score better than
he has for a long time.
Gould may not get as many chances to be fluent if he gets
involved in safety play with Davis.Assuming he beats robbo
Well done to both players terrific match,I even knocked off
a bit early to watch the second session.

I don't think he realised he had fouled , one thing you can say about Davis is he plays the game like a gentleman

They did say that it was so fine a touch that maybe Steve had not felt it, which is entirely possible.
