    I know! Sorry - Steve Davis wasn't my guess... I was just querying the suggestion that Steve Davis had never been world number 1.... and I hadn't yet seen the new question when I wrote that!

    Given the options left, I'll take a punt at Ronnie O'Sullivan. One would have to assume Joe, Fred and John Pulman, probably Spencer too, to have been regarded as world number one, before the days of an actual ranking list.
