    Exactly.

So what we have now is:

    Fiendish Challenge.

Clue 2: Think of a synonym of challenge is this context, and a synonm of fiendish, and see if what you are left with is an anagram of anybody's name on this board.

Yes lagermike, that was my understanding.

So presumably the phrase comes from the 'other' meaning of gauntlet, which brings us a phrase 'to throw down the gauntlet' which equates to such a challenge.

Rather like throwing your hat into the ring, apart from the fact that I know the meaning of 'hat'.

'throw down the gauntlet' means set a challenging precedent for someone to try and meet or indeed better.

What does it mean when you 'throw down the gauntlet' ?

And also, my dictionary, on my laptop, has a second definition.

    Sadly not,

think of gauntlet as NOTHING to do with any sort of armour.

    What else could it mean?

so second definition is armor? Can't find lots of useful names.
How about Barrymoldon - Bondly armor

Is the board member active at all?

    Good thinking Statman

    But sadly the wrong lines.

You solve the puzzle to find two words, which are an anagram of someone on this board's name.

So again, 2nd definition of gauntlet?

Some kind of glove, a fiendish glove?

    Glove > mitten > kitten > miaow > Meo ??????

    Fiendish > bad > phoney > Tony

    Tony Meo!
