We all just want what's best for the growth of the game - whether that means long matches or short matches.

I'm sure Hearn will get the balance right, at home and abroard. I certainly have every confidence that he'll get the balance right.

Yes, that's the main problem here. All this talk of decline applies mostly to the UK, and it should be addressed. But you can't call an event the "World Championship" and then take steps to increase the UK interest at the expense of the rest of the world.

There are things that could be done of course, but shortening the events is not one of them.

when are people going to realise the decline has more to do with people got other things to do.

in 1985 as snooker got 18 million viewers Eastenders Got 30 million Viewers.

today eastenders are over the moon with 13 million.

as for attendances at tournaments obviously i havent got figures but as a person thats been there done that since the early 80s theres nothing between them. its just peoples perception thats changed.

The main tennis tournaments last 2 weeks, men and women including. One has to consider snooker only has 6 major tournaments and there is no league running for the whole year. In basketball, baseball and ice hockey, hundreds of games are played before the ultimate champion is known. 2 weeks of snooker looks short in this view. If it would be reduced to a week, what is the difference with any other tournament?

I didn't see any precise information about when are they planning to shorten the WC. Is it going to be this year or in the future? How much do they want to cut down the frames? One day final means that it will be best of 19. Then, what about the SF, QF, second round?

This is by far the worst idea i've ever heard related to snooker. If one calls himself a snooker fan, then he wouldn't mind if the final ends on monday. For me it's fine if it ends in tuesday, wednesday or any other day. I'd watch snooker on New Year's Eve if there is any on tv. Who cares if shortening of the WC would attract more viewers? I mean, who needs them anyway. They come and go, and never realy understand the esence of the game. Snooker should fight to keep it's die hard fans, because they are the ones that supported the sport in these gloomy years, and they are here to stay!

                Hands off the WC!!!

(and don't call J Higgins an idiot, it's not cool)

The World Championship shouldn't be even one frame shorter. The drama of the great come backs have been so exciting precisely because of the length of matches. Leave it alone, its great as it is. As for other tournaments - I like the longer matches because it finds out who really is the best as there is more time for luck to even out.

lets ask a question to all the members on here .

whitch tournament was the first tournament you saw and got you hooked on the sport ?

mine was without a doubt the World Championship and i know that a very high percentage of people will say the same and it was not played over 5 frames with 6 reds and a shot clock.

                        agreed.

and all of those snooker players say they'd want it shorter just because they're lazy

I don't get what the likes of O'sullivan, Hendry and Higgins are really saying. I understand that these are 3 of the greatest players ever, but they are saying just seems odd.

I don't think that the most prestigous snooker tournament should be altered. If there was in fact an issue with the tournament, I'm all ears to hear why it should be shortened. I don't see how 20/20 equivalents in snooker would benefit anyone.

If anything, why not include other tournaments to experiment with rather than the WC? If it was for me, I'd like to see the UK and even the Masters extended. (For such a coveted tournament, I don't think best of 11 is suitable for the Masters)

I would like to see the WC extended. They are supposed to be finding out who is the best snooker player in the world.

In 1972 the final was best of 73 frames. which Alex Higgins won.

The longer format is how I feel you can best decide who the absolute best is but the powers that be in snooker have always made mistakes down the years.

I like the legend that is Alex Higgins but if I am correct 1972 was the year Rex Williams was diddled a bit as one semi final was best of 73 with John Spencer and Eddie Charlton the other one was best of 61 with Alex Higgins winning Rex 31 - 30.

I always felt a bit sad for Rex Williams over that one.

There is no way that the WC or the Uk should be shortened. They could save time in the WC by eliminating the break after four frames and starting the final session at a bloody decent time.

It was the Welsh Open. And what REALLY got me hooked was to see snooker life, and that was "only" a small invitational in Warshaw...
