in the last 7 years or so the winner and the runner up of the previouse Wc cant make it further than the QF round

2007: dott lost in the first, ebbo in the 2nd
2008:higgins in the 2nd, selby in the 1st
2009:ronnie and ali in the 2nd
2010:higgins in the 2nd and murphy in the QF
2011:neil in the 1st and and dott in the Qf
2012: higgins in the 2nd again and trump also in the 2nd

the closest to defend his title in the last 12 years or so was ronnie who reached the SF in 2002

Fantastic win for Ali...very well done. Also considering the bad luck that he got sometimes, together with the good fortune from Judd.

Well played to Judd as well at the end with laying the snookers. He really made it hard for Ali and kept fighting.

Judd however still needs to learn not to fiddle with the water bottle when your opponent is getting ready for the handshake...but 'll chalk that up to inexperience and disappointment of losing a hard-fought match.

Incredible match...the most enjoyable final frames for me so far in the tournament.

Don't worry...it will definately be repeated It was during the aftermatch interview with Rob Walker...Peter ran up to Ali and gave him a big fat one on the forehead...surprised Ali more than anyone hahaha...great moment!

I'm split on this match, probably my two favourite players in the game. I'm just disappointed they meet this early in the tournament because we are losing a player who could arguably reached the semi final if they were in another part of the draw.
I expect Judd to win simply because when he's on form he frightens his opponent more than anyone else in the game right now. Carter will have to play flawless in every session to stand a chance, he's capable of that, but I just think that Judd will have too much for him in the end.

I can't see this being a one sided affair, could even be a final frame decider!!!

Ah well, another prediction come true. Said after day one that we could see a record number of qualifiers make it through, I should be a pundit for the BBC, I'm wasted on here!
