Hi iv just bought a maximus ultimate and wondered if anyone could tell me the best way to keep the shaft nice and smooth and in good condition?

once every few weeks wipe with a damp cloth and buff dry. after a year or two you might need some oil.

                  common sense.

you do not treat the wood with water, Mi amigo !!

NOTE , If the shaft is varnished ( NOT OIL FINISHED ), using a piece of damp cloth , can do no harm.

in terms of cleaning, makes no diff Cuz by using a damp cloth, 40/50 percent of chalk remains on the shaft .

In my personal experience, I've found that using a damp cloth makes the shaft feel dry after a few times. If the cue is getting sticky I first try to buff with a dry microfibre towel, if that does not remove the residue I then use some #0000 wire wool very gently which brings up a lovely natural shine, without drying out the wood. Finish up by buffing with the microfibre and you're done. I personally oil every 6 months but you don't need to do it that often.

solid advice but the maximus cue has a shellac finish so would need rather a lot of wire wool work to cut through it.

I've not heard of a shellac finish on a cue before. What benefits does this provide?
